It is with great pride and affection that we bring to FFF 2019 ‘FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY’ followed by post screening banter with cast, crew and those involved.  


Carmel Winters’ second feature ‘Float Like a Butterfly’ is the powerful story of a young woman’s fight for freedom and belonging. 15-year-old Frances expertly played by Hazel Doupe, has to fight for the right to push back. Raised in roadside camps in rural Ireland in the 1970’s, Frances wants to champion her people inside the boxing ring and out, like her idol Muhammad Ali. But society is determined to break her spirit and destroy her way of life. Her father played by Dara Devaney returns from jail broken, once her greatest ally, he finds it hard to imagine any better for his daughter, but Frances was born to be a Champion not a victim.

Filmed between Goleen and Skibbereen Carmel wanted to fill the film with the Irish weather and landscape, with children, babies, horses, dogs and chickens, and all sorts of other unruly entities you can’t get inside a theatre and to showcase the magic and power of the place and people where she lives and she has certainly done that. The West Cork landscapes, seascapes and depth of colour and texture in the film is breath-taking. An absolute must see.

Written and Directed by Carmel Winters, Produced by Samson Films (David Collins and Martina Niland) musical score by Stephen Warbeck. Winner at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival of  The FIPRESCI Prize for the Discovery Programme a major coup for any independent film and winner of the Audience Award for Best Film at the Cork Film Festival among several other nominations.






Kieran Horgan’s Sound Workshop

We are delighted to bring to FFF Award winning Sound Engineer Kieran Horgan who will host a Sound Workshop. Kieran is best known for his work on Reign of Fire, Michael Collins, In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot and Veronica Guerin. Winner of several BAFTAs for Best Sound with The Farthest 2018, Family 1995 and The Snapper 1994.

Kieran Horgan aka “Kiwi” with over 48 years working in the film industry as a sound mixer on Feature Films, TV Series, Documentaries and Commercials. Winner of two Baftas for Best Sound with The Snapper and Family, a golden Reel Nomination for Michael Collins as well as an IFTA for Best Sound 2018 for The Farthest. Kieran has worked on over 50 films including Veronica Guerin, Ella Enchanted, Reign of Fire, Michael Collins, The Snapper, In the Name of the Father, The Field, Angel, The Butcher Boy among others.
Sound is Kieran’s passion. It is one of the most important ways we communicate with each other. It is the glue used to stick the magic of filmmaking together, especially action films. We hear the sound of a gunshot, birds in the trees, atmosphere of a city, town or countryside. We hear the screams of fans at a sports event or the sound of vehicles, every sound we can relate to. Sounds adds a third dimension to a series of moving pictures, adding colour and texture. Sound takes us beyond the boundaries of the frame and adds continuity to what we see visually.
Dialogue is one of the easiest ways to communicate, if you can’t understand or hear clearly the story gets lost, interfering with the flow of the film. In the workshop I will explain how very important the dialogue and effects tie a film together and how infuriating it is to hear bad sound. Directors often overlook the importance of getting good sound during the shoot, with an overreliance on radio mics and fixing things in post-production. We will look at sound adding an extra dimension to a film while carrying the narrative. An action scene of 100’s of shots can all be tied together seamlessly by sound.

Join FFF for a fun Silent Auction March 16th 2019

As many of you are aware we have been gifted a beautiful landmark building in the heart of Schull, West Cork and the transformation of this beautiful building into a world class performance centre is in the planning. This space will consist of a 120 seater auditorium with stage, cinema, rooms for workshops, archives, greenscreen, editing suite and more. For every €1 raised from this auction our sponsor will contribute €2…..so we need your help.

The live event will take place on the 16th March 2019 at the Fastnet Film Centre, Schull. Doors will open at 7.30pm. The €10 entry fee which will include live music, wine, nibbles, auction entry and registration. Guaranteed to be a great fun night! If you can’t make it to Schull on the night, don’t worry you can always take part online. We have an amazing array of film memorabilia, art and curios.

Welcome to our new Patron Maureen Hughes

It is our privilege to welcome our new Patron Maureen Hughes, a great friend of the festival for many years. 

Casting director, Maureen Hughes, began her career at the Druid Theatre, Galway in 1984. In 1991, she became Casting Director at the Abbey Theatre under the Artistic Directorship of Garry Hynes where she remained until 1994. She joined UK Casting Director Susie Figgis in 1996 to find the lead casting for Neil Jordan’s THE BUTCHER BOY and subsequently went freelance in film and television casting. Film credits include ONCE which won an Oscar for Best Song in 2009, and SIX SHOOTER, which won an Oscar for Best Live Action Short in 2006. Her television work includes SINGLE HANDED, RAW and LOVE/HATE. She worked on THE OTHER SIDE OF SLEEP, directed by Rebecca Daly, which premiered at Directors Fortnight in Cannes, Paolo Sorrentino’s THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, starring Sean Penn and Eve Hewson; A THOUSAND TIMES GOOD NIGHT, which won the Jury Prize and Best Film at Montreal Film Festival; and NOBLE. Maureen works in the The Factory in Dublin where she is part of the team who run The Factory Acting Programme – a one-year screen acting programme.
