Back home from the ever wonderful West Cork and ever wonderful FFF’s Helen, Pauline and Hilary. Helen emails my task which is watch and judge 20 documentary films for this year’s festival. No doubt I shall find a thousand things to do – my sock drawer has needed some attention for months – before diving into the online pile.  Writer Douglas Adams, a champion procrastinator, said: “I love deadlines, I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”

Watching the BAFTA shorts finalists this year I loved the drama ‘Standby’. For me it was all a short should be: not just a short version of what could be a full length feature, conceived as a short – it is a short, it has pace, is inviting and you get it straight away.
