In the Appalachian mountains of 1907, musicologist Janet McTeer, stumbles upon a treasure trove of ancient Scots-Irish ballads, handed down from generation to generation. Lily ventures into the most isolated areas to collect these songs and finds herself increasingly enchanted by both the rugged purity of the music and the endurance of the local people as they carve out meaningful lives in the harshest conditions. It is not until she meets Tom - a handsome, hardened war veteran and talented musician - that she is forced to examine her motivations.
